Moore College
The Certificate of Theology from Moore College is a well established distance learning course from Australia, renowned for its ability to help students engage with the Bible, theology and Church History. It is designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing students to go at their own pace.
There are three levels to the course. The first level is the Preliminary Theological Certificate; the second level is the Intermediate Theological Certificate ; the third level builds on the knowledge gained in the previous two certificates and leads to the Moore College Certificate in Theology.
There are no prior educational requirements; though students should be aware that the course is roughly of A'level standard. Students should be prepared to spend about five hours each week studying the subject.
You can study 1 or 2 modules per term, and enrol in as many or as few terms as you like. It is recommended that students study the modules in the specified order but exceptions can be made to this. You can enrol in any time.
The course is structured in a way that encourages students to study within the usual termly structure of the British academic system. There are 3 terms, commencing in September, January and April. Each term lasts ten weeks and is followed by a two week exam period. Exams are currently the only form of assessment in the course. If you wish to gain the certificate, then the exams must be taken and passed. But students are welcome to take the course without any formal assessment, just for personal growth.
The course is not designed to lead to ordination in any denomination, but can be a valuable introduction to full time theological study. Some denominations are willing to offer students exemption from part of their Lay Reader / Lay Preacher training if they hold the Preliminary Theological certificate.
